Moving Notice

Sorry I forgot to write a post here to redirect you folks to my new blog, which I have already been using for 9 months. I will not be writing anymore here on Xanga, so please bookmark my new blog and read my posts there. Thanks.

Dear friends,

It’s time for me to move my blog to a new place. I’m quite fed up with xanga. Ever since Wordpress released version 2.7, I find myself unable to resist switching over. Now my blog is hosted on my own domain www.theoryspace.com. For those who subscribe to RSS feeds can subscribe to my blog posts and comments. For those who wanted to try out the bliss of Wordpress but don’t have your own web hosting, you can try the online hosted version Wordpress.com. There you can obtain a free account named username.wordpress.com.

However, I won’t abandon my friends at xanga. I’ll cross-post back to xanga so that they can still be in the loop. (But please, learn how to subscribe feeds using RSS, so you won’t be stuck in the tiny xanga community and be able to read all the blogs elsewhere. For a quick tutorial on RSS in plain english, watch this commoncraft video.)

Adios.

Anson

Not the God I know of

After receiving much criticism from the gay community about inviting evangelical pastor Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at his inauguration, Barack Obama extended his invitation to the openly gay bishop V. Gene Robinson to deliver the invocation at a kickoff inaugural event two days prior the inauguration itself.

Rick Warren seems to get what Obama is trying to do and complimented his intentional choice of people from two ends of the spectrum to represent the diverseness of the country and the culture of his administration.

“President-elect Obama has again demonstrated his genuine commitment to bringing all Americans of goodwill together in search of common ground,” Warren said in a statement provided to Christianity Today. “I applaud his desire to be the president of every citizen.” [link]

On the other hand, Robinson was not very positive towards Warren’s presence.

“I’m all for Rick Warren being at the table,” Bishop Robinson said, “but we’re not talking about a discussion, we’re talking about putting someone up front and center at what will be the most watched inauguration in history, and asking his blessing on the nation. And the God that he’s praying to is not the God that I know.” [link]

Yup, he said it: “And the God he’s praying to is not the God that I know.”

Bingo. That’s the crux of the matter all along.

IcebergThe rift happening in the Anglican Communion is not about gay or not gay, but about orthodox Christianity versus another religion. There are two conflicting religious worldviews underneath the same label, holding two different understandings of who God is. The disagreement is theological, not sociological. The matter at stake is the gospel. The gay issue, as Rev. Dr. Kendall Harmon indicated, is simply the “tip of the iceberg“.

Protestantism’s Magical Void

Magic 8 ball

“At first sight the Reformation appeared to have dispensed with this whole apparatus of supernatural assistance. It denied the value of the Church’s rituals and referred the believer back to the unpredictable mercies of God. If religion continued to be regarded by its adherents as a source of power, then it was a power which was patently much diminished. Yet the problems for which the magical remedies of the past had provided some sort of solution were still there - the fluctuations of nature, the hazards of fire, the threat of plague and disease, the fear of evil spirits, and all the uncertainties of daily life. How was it that men were able to renounce the magical solutions offered by the medieval Church before they had devised any technical remedies to put in their place? Were they now mentally prepared to face up to such problems by sole reliance upon their own resources and techniques? Did they have to turn to other kinds of magical control in order to replace the remedies offered by medieval religion? Or was Protestantism itself forced against its own premises to devise a magic of its own?”

Keith Thomas, Religion and the Decline of Magic, p.77

Speed Limit 60

(論文題目為 A Survey of Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud,絕對係堅嘢,唔係嗰啲所謂榮譽博士)
